Sat. 29th April 1854
Kate King left and a dirty green Ellen took the place & staid 3 days -- paid her a dollar. Then Ann Hickey came. I hope she knows something.
Sund. 30th
I went to church with Miss C. & Dr. in the morn. Rained.
Monday May 1st
Pleasant. Ellen Sullivan & Miss C., Dr. E.A. & myself went to Mr. Knapps levee[?]. Stormed badly all the rest of the week to Frid. 5th eve. When Ellen went to Boston with Sen. Dr. R.C. ^vacation^ [written above line] went to Dorchester.

M. swept parlors. Dr. C. went to Prov. R. Cush. went to Cam.
7th Sund.
Mr. K. in the morn. Rev'd. Crosby afternoon. I went all day & wrote to S Wood in the eve. Dr. Charles returned Mond. 8th eve.
Wednes. 10th
I desire[?] to work hard, to try to teach the lazy Hickey.
Frid. 12th
Mary Cushing arrived.
Sat. 13th
I sat with Mary -- an hour or so quietly while she cut her trim for plaid silk.

We went to church.
Tues. 16th
M. & I went to Bridgewater, the first chance we had to see the young Phipps.
Thurs. 18th
Laura & babe & A. Arnold, Mary & I arrived in Brookline fr. B.
Sund.
We all went to church. Rained & thundered in the afternoon.

Mr. Phipps & Ann came
Tues. 23d
The girls all went to A. Barnetts. Mrs. SullivanMrs. Sullivan & Anna called in the morning and Ellen & Anna Sullivan came out in the eve. Went to B.
Thurs. 25th
We went to Mrs. Candlers. E.J.C. made a call Wednes.

Mr. Phipps & Anna made us a short vis. one night. [This line is crossed out]
Tues. 30th
Anniversary dinner. Laura went to Boston met Rev'd. P. -- had a fine time at the Hall.
I dismissed Mary Ann, a girl from Cutlers.The Cutlers She had been here a week and after the first 3 days she tried to shirk & neglect her work. I never was more furiously tried with mean help then I have in the last 4 weeks -- and now I have only one -- Mary Duffley Foley widow. I worked hard 3 weeks.
June 17th Sat.
Mary -- the California widow came to live with us in Brookline -- 2$ pr. week.
June 19th
R. Cushing paid up for board and left to board at Mr. Edmonds 17th 1854. Charly left us for St. Louis 5th. Arr. in St. Louis 12 June, was disappointed, returned to B. & sailed for California from N. York 6th July 1854.
Mond. June 26th
Mary Cushing & self left N. Prov. for Manchester. Spent one week with S. Cheney.
June 20th
I left cares & work behind me and staid a month at the homestead EJC. The second week in July Laura & family came home to B. to stay until the new house was done. I returned to B. Had my chamber & bed-sted cleaned. Ellen Sullivan staid with us a month. S. Wood came up fr. Nahant. Then moved to Abby Barnetts -- Spent 11 days. Not in good health. I went to Nahant to the Regatta with E.A.W. and Sullivans.

Abraham L. and Hannah Cutler. They built a house on Chestnut Street (#11, still standing) in 1854 or 1855. It's not clear where in Brookline they lived before that.

Louis-Phillipe Jullien's band, which Mary had seen in Philadelphia (p22), played at the Music Hall in Boston this week. Members of the family attended several times.
