Jan'y 22d - Monday 1855
The wheels turning heavily. G.A.W. said Dr. Wild's coming soon. Susan's been not quite so well -- canker humor round it that disappeared in 4 days.
25th
Mrs. Rush's grand ball. G.A. went Sat. G.A. growing more uneasy -- got Miss Greene to talk to Susan and argue that day. I wrote to Dr. Wild to telegraph back when he would come. letter reached him Tues. He set out Wednes. got here Thurs. Feb 1st noon. Found Susan had run down but the ulcer not so large as when she left Prov, by one half. He was desirous to put her under med treatment, and give some Dr. a description of the case but he was denied. There by hangs a long story better not recorded.
Sund. 4th of Feb
Dr. Wild started for the East & Dr. NorriceDr. Norrice made his first visit to Susan. Owing to a variety of circumstances, she ran down until she kept her bed [in?] chamber two days then, today she seems better
Sat. 10th Feb.
I have written to Mary today, it has been good sleighing these two days. Zero weather during the week, a severe snow storm.
I left Phil. about 15th Feb. Staid in Prov. few days. Went out to see Roby & spent the night, arriv. in Brookline the 20th Feb'y. Found things dingy -- Mrs. Chase not fond of cleaning.
I had to work too much to get things comfortable. About the first of March the painters began the outside of the house. Chase left & Mary Williams came. I took cold & the smell of paint made me sick. For two weeks I was very wretched. Furnace smoked, house cold and my lungs suffered. Anna PhippsAnna Phipps made me a vis. of 6 weeks or so and Thurs. 19th of April. I took A home to Bridgewater, found Mr. P. very sick. -- Watty had staid here two nights and set out some shrubs. Then Wat went to Prov 19th April. I came from Bridge.

Went to Musical Fund with Ed & Sullivans
Sund. 22d April
Mr. Knapp made the program & Mr. PopeMr. Pope prchd. First Time Mr. K has been into the pulpit since Sept. I wrote letters to day Sund. to Susy & one to Wat. in N. Prov. A very cold backward spring so far. Miss Homans spent a week here.

This is presumably Mary's granddaughter Anna, who was five years old at the time.

This is probably Augustus R. Pope, minister of the First Church in Somerville at the time.

Louis-Phillipe Jullien's band, which Mary had seen in Philadelphia (p22), played at the Music Hall in Boston this week. Members of the family attended several times.
